Why Deadbolt Installation Quality Matters More Than the Lock Brand Alone
A premium Schlage or Kwikset deadbolt installed sloppily is weaker than a mid-grade lock set into a properly reinforced strike plate and solid door frame. This is the reality most big-box store instructions leave out. When our technicians assess your door, they check the door thickness, the frame integrity, the alignment of the bore holes, and whether the existing strike plate is anchored with screws long enough to reach the structural framing behind the door jamb — three-inch screws versus the standard half-inch screws make an enormous difference in kick-in resistance. Memphis sees its share of property crime across different neighborhoods, and a deadbolt that is technically installed but mechanically compromised is security theater, not security.
We also evaluate whether a standard single-cylinder deadbolt is the right choice or whether your door configuration would benefit from a double-cylinder unit, a jimmy proof deadbolt installation — ideal for doors with glass panels or sidelights where a hand could reach a thumb turn — or a mortise lock assembly. Mortise lock systems, which recess into the body of the door rather than sitting on the surface, offer a fundamentally stronger mechanical connection between the lock body, the door, and the frame. They are common in older Memphis homes with thicker, solid-wood doors, and our team is experienced in both servicing legacy mortise lock hardware and installing new mortise lock systems where the door construction supports them.
